A warm welcome to all our children and families.

The curriculum we follow is called the Early Years Foundation Stage. This can be read here.

Information for parents and carers

Spring 2

It has been a very busy, active and exciting half-term. We loved our topic ‘Can you tell a story?’. We explored the different traditional tales: Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and The Gingerbread Man; the children enjoyed being able to retell them themselves (‘Fee fi fo fum!’ has rung out around the classrooms and corridors throughout the half-term). We have built castles out of junk modelling, baked gingerbread men and each class presented their learning to the rest of the school in their first ever class assemblies. Over the half-term we have found out about different ways to keep ourselves healthy and carried out an experiment on the effects different drinks have on our teeth. The children have loved their Wannado Street Dance PE lessons with Kerry, developing their ability to remember the different moves and keep in time to the music. A real highlight of the half-term was our forest school sessions with Mrs Eales. We have had a lot of fun exploring our surroundings, developing our maths skills and enjoying creating potions and delicious dishes in the mud kitchen. We also had a visit from Kathryn from St George’s Church, who came in to talk to the children about Easter.

The children have continued to enjoy free flow where they are able to explore their learning in the classroom or in the different areas. We are very lucky to have the corridor, front playground and courtyard where, among many other activities, the children can have fun in the mud kitchen, investigate moving water, plant bulbs in our garden and role-play.

Summer 1 half term our topic will be 'How do you grow?' We will begin with a very exciting visit from RepTylers on Wednesday 17th April. They will bring different ‘creatures, critters and creepy crawlies’ for the children to hold while we find out all about their life cycles. Over the half-term, we will continue to explore different life cycles in nature. The children will be able to observe life cycles in action as we take care of caterpillars and plant our own sunflowers. We will focus on new and exciting vocabulary that we can use in our own speech. We will continue to listen to different music, thinking about how it makes us feel and joining in with singing different songs and rhymes. The children will also explore playing different musical instruments, including boxed glockenspiels. In our maths work we will: explore the composition of numbers beyond 10; develop our counting skills; explore adding and subtracting; investigate how shapes can be combined and separated to make new shapes. Our PSED topic this half-term is ‘Relationships’; we will be focussing on family and friends, thinking about our roles in our families as well as how to make friends and be the best friends that we can be. The children will use the skills they learnt in Bikeability on our own balance bikes. We will continue to explore the changing world around us as we move through another season.

As we continue to grow together as a year group, we will make sure we are considering the feelings of others around us as well as our own feelings when making decisions. We will support each other in facing new challenges in our learning, encouraging each other to persevere if we find things tricky.

Each week we send home an email with information about the phonics we have been learning in school. Every other week we will send home a key maths skill that the children are developing with ideas for ways to support your child with their learning at home.

Please note Summer 1 half-term:

PE day Monday for all Reception classes

Please send your child into school wearing their PE kit on a Monday.
